Betternet is the Windows app of the multi-platform VPN from Betternet Technologies Inc. The app allows you to surf anonymously and securely through an intermediary server between your computer and the service you are using.
Free mode and paid mode
Betternet is available free of charge, although with some limitations. For example, you are restricted to 500MB of free traffic at a limited speed and you can only connect to a few servers located in countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, France, Italy and Spain. If you are looking to browse without traffic limits and with access to more than 100 countries, you will have to sign up for the paid subscription, either paying monthly or annually.
Betternet features
When connected to Betternet, your external IP address will be different for any service you visit. What's more, your web activity will be anonymous and no one will be able to track you. Betternet encrypts both your connection validation and traffic, so no service will know that you are using a VPN. There is also DNS filtering to unblock geoblocked websites.
Network protocols
Betternet allows you to use three network protocols. The first of these is Hydra, which is very fast and one of the safest on the planet. There is also IKEv2 (IPSec), which is fast, but easier for operators to block. Last but not least, there is Wireguard, which is highly secure, but not as fast as the other two. By default, Betternet automatically chooses the fastest one.
Choose Betternet's default behavior
In the Betternet settings you can customize several aspects of the program's behavior. For example, you can enable the option to open on Windows startup or to automatically connect every time you open the program. You can also enable the VPN if you connect to insecure Wi-Fi networks by default. Finally, you can exclude apps and websites so that their traffic does not pass through the VPN, and, inversely, choose websites where the traffic will only circulate through the VPN.
Download Betternet and surf securely on Windows.
